| Description | Kent A. Higgins is the president of the Idaho State Bar. A Pocatello native, Kent has practiced law at Merrill & Merrill since 2002. Kent received both his bachelor’s degree and law degree from Brigham Young University in 1979 and 1982, respectively. While attending law school, Kent served as an author and editor of the J. Reuben Clark Law School Journal of Legal Studies. Kent actively practices in both Idaho and Utah and he is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in both states. He is also licensed with and practiced before the United States Supreme Court, three of the Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals, the United States Tax Court, and the United States Court of Federal Claims. Kent is also licensed to practice before the Tribal Court of the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. Kent primarily handles large personal injury and death claims, though he also continues to practice in Workers’ Compensation and commercial litigation. He has handled some of the largest toxic tort cases in Eastern Idaho. Kent is also the city attorney for three Eastern Idaho cities. In 2014, Kent became the president of the Sixth District Bar Association. Kent has also served as a section leader for the Pocatello Inns of Court and he is an active member for the Federal Court Bar Associations in both Idaho and Utah. Prior to joining Merrill & Merrill, Kent was a state representative in the Idaho State Legislature for District 29 where he served on the Education, Business, and Local Government Committees. Kent also is the chairman of the Southeast Idaho Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society and committee member of the Pocatello Rotary Club Vocational-Technical Committee. He founded the Bonneville County Youth Court in 1994 and served for four years as a mentor. Kent and his wife, Heidi, have six children. Kent enjoys scuba diving, traveling, backpacking, bodybuilding, and spending time with his family and friends. |
