| Description | Harriet Newman Cohen, who is known as the ‘doyenne’ of matrimonial and family law attorneys in New York City, is a founding partner of Cohen Stine Kapoor LLP, a dynamic post-pandemic matrimonial and family law firm that launched on January 1, 2021. She has partnered with Martha Cohen Stine, her daughter, and Ankit Kapoor, her fellow alumnus, albeit two generations her junior. The new firm’s partners span three generations of lawyers. Ms. Cohen represents celebrities and other high net worth individuals, but, at the same time, does not turn away other worthy clients. Ms. Cohen has represented Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Linda Lavin, Ute Lemper, Laurence Fishburne, NBA star Paul George, an NFL star, Howard Stern’s ex (Alison), Patricia Duff (former wife of billionaire Ronald Perelman), and the former wives of the Weinstein Brothers, among other celebrities, as part of her family law practice. Ms. Cohen was the subject of a feature profile written by Michael Y. Park for New York Super Lawyers, 2008, entitled, ‘The Second Life of Harriet Cohen, What the Matrimonial Lawyer Learned to Share with the World.’ With this launch of her new law firm, Ms. Cohen enters her Third Life her post-pandemic professional life. Ms. Cohen serves on the Executive Board of the Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association and has been selected as one of the TOP 50 Female Lawyers by the NY Metro Super Lawyers, 2009-2021; the criteria include being one of ‘the women lawyers who received the highest point totals in the New York Super Lawyers-Metro Edition nomination, research and blue ribbon review process.’ Ms. Cohen has also been selected as one of the TOP 100 lawyers (men and women) by the NY Metro Super Lawyers, 2010-2021. Ms. Cohen’s former matrimonial law firm was listed as one of the 50 Law Firms Professionals Should Know About, by Super Lawyers, based on the high ratings of all of the firm’s lawyers. She writes an annual article on matrimonial and family law for the New York Law Journal’s Special Matrimonial Section as well as regular analyses and articles for the edification of bench, bar and lay persons. Ms. Cohen was also the co-author of, ‘Valuation of Property in Marital Dissolutions,’ XXIII ABA Fam., and she contributes scholarly chapters to books and treatises, sharing her expertise with the public.
