A graduate of Lexington Senior High School in Lexington, NC, she received a B.A. and an M.F.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in Greensboro, NC. She subsequently earned her Juris Doctor at Wake Forest University School of Law in Winston-Salem, NC. She moved to the Outer Banks in 1986 and resides in Nags Head, with family in Lexington, NC and Fuquay-Varina, NC.
