| Description | Mary Sharp is a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent-rated attorney. She is a certified mediator, and serves as a Municipal Court judge for the city of Beaufort. Mary has twenty-five years of experience representing clients as both plaintiffs and defendants in state, federal, and appellate courts in South Carolina. She represents and counsels clients in matters including those involving personal injury, commercial litigation, construction litigation, insurance coverage, retail and hospitality, automobile and truck accidents, premises liability, and homeowners’ association litigation. Mary was named a 2015 South Carolina Super Lawyer. Mary has served the legal community on both the national and state levels. She currently serves as Secretary of the South Carolina Bar, and on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Bar Foundation. Mary is also Immediate Past-President of the Charleston, SC, Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). ABOTA is an invitation-only organization that requires extensive experience as lead counsel in civil trials and recognizes lawyers respected by their peers for their professional demeanor and integrity as advocates. She is also Immediate Past-Chair of the Defense Research Institute (DRI) Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. In 2009, Mary was honored as one of 10 South Carolina ‘Leaders in the Law’ by South Carolina Lawyers Weekly, in the inaugural year of those awards. Mary has played a lead role in organizing local and national diversity events dedicated to promoting greater diversity in the field of law, and is a past President of the Board of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Association and a past President of the Board of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. Mary is also on the Advisory Board of the Penn Center, the site of the former Penn School, one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves, and one of the most significant African-American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. In 2013, Mary was nominated and selected to participate as one of 44 leaders from across the Lowcountry in the 8th Riley Institute at Furman’s Diversity Leaders Initiative. Fellows in this prestigious program work with a cross-section of identified leaders to create relationships and platforms to help South Carolina successfully compete in the 21st century. Her involvement in the community has been extensive, and includes serving as a past President of the Board of Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, and as a past President of the Board of Friends of Caroline Hospice, as well as serving on the boards of Historic Beaufort Foundation, Broad River Healthcare, and the Child Abuse Prevention Association. Mary is a native of Aiken, South Carolina, and received her B.A. in business administration from North Carolina State University, and her J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law. Prior to starting Sharp Law Firm, Mary was a member at Griffith, Sharp & Liipfert, LLC, in Beaufort, SC, and its predecessor firms. |
