DescriptionI believe in preventative law. A good attorney focuses on helping clients AVOID problems, rather than having to spend time getting them out of trouble. Too many clients wait until their legal problems have grown too large to be easily resolved, and are unhappy when the solution is difficult. It’s much more cost-effective to seek legal advice from a trusted attorney early on and prevent lengthy and expensive legal work resulting from limited options later in the game. Bob is the real estate, trusts, and estate-planning specialist at our firm. He brings years of experience in helping his clients attain their goals. In any given day, he may be advising clients on buying the house of their dreams or relocating their business to a much better location, while successfully addressing all legal issues associated with the most complicated moves. In the estate planning and administration area, Bob is uniquely attuned to understanding the objectives and personal preferences of those preparing to pass their estates on to others. He has spent decades providing wise and timely advice, while fulfilling his clients’ final wishes for estate distribution. Always respectful and empathetic, Bob’s savvy approach to managing complex and ever-changing inheritance laws and taxes produces the most beneficial outcomes for all involved. Even with a family legacy including five generations of lawyers, it wasn’t until his junior year at UNC Chapel Hill that Bob decided to join the family business. After law school, also at Chapel Hill, he joined his father’s labor law firm. However, when Bob started practicing, they asked him to focus on their new areas of legal work real estate, trusts, and estates. With the exception of two years spent in the Public Defender’s office, this is where Bob has concentrated his expertise since 1968. Bob has become a trusted confidante of many influential families and philanthropic organizations over the years. He treats every client, no matter the monetary value of their matter, or their position in the community, with dignity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to their unique concerns and desires. Bob is married to Susan Hunt Douglas, a Burlington native, and they have two children. Robert is 36 and in sales with Rackspace, a computer hosting company, in San Antonio, Texas. Landy is 31, and serves as Assistant Director of Federal Affairs and Director of the Washington office for Duke University. When he isn’t helping his clients, Bob enjoys golfing, backpacking and bluegrass music (listening, not playing). Each fall he takes a 10-day hiking trip with a group of colleagues. Past destinations have included Alaska, Canada, California, Washington, Montana, Wyoming and the Grand Canyon. He is particularly happy to go off the grid and leave his phone and emails behind for a spell.
