DescriptionPaul C. Kurland concentrates in matrimonial and family law, as well as civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution in commercial, corporate, business and estate disputes, including arbitration and mediation. He is admitted to practice law in New York State and before numerous federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He received a B.A. degree from Brooklyn College (1967) and a J.D. from New York University School of Law (1970). For every year since 1985, Mr. Kurland has been awarded the AV Preeminentâ„¢ (5 out of 5) rating by Martindale-Hubbell, the nationally recognized legal directory, signifying the highest rating for legal ability and professional standards of conduct and ethics. He has also been among the elite group of attorneys listed as Super Lawyers in New York for each year since the inception of Super Lawyers in New York in 2006. From 1970-1973, Mr. Kurland was an associate and litigator with Cahill, Gordon & Reindel, and a member of the team that represented The New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case. He was an associate at Emil Kobrin Klein & Garbus from 1973 to 1977. In 1977 Mr. Kurland founded the firm of Kurland & Scheiman PC, which merged with Baer Marks & Upham in 1979 where Mr. Kurland was a partner, and served as chair of the litigation department (1979-1985), In 1986 Mr. Kurland joined Snow Becker Krauss PC and for 25 years (1986-2011) served as a partner, chair of the litigation department and member of the executive committee. In 2012 Mr. Kurland joined Cohen Rabin Stine Schumann LLP (2011 – 2018) as a partner focusing on matrimonial and family law, as well as concentrating on civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution, commercial, corporate and business disputes, including arbitration and mediation. In 2019 Mr. Kurland joined Hennessey & Bienstock LLP as a partner, continuing to focus on matrimonial and family law, as well as civil litigation, arbitration and mediation in commercial, corporate, business, employment, and estate disputes. For more than 35 years, Mr. Kurland has been a member of the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA), as well as a member of the faculty of the intensive trial techniques programs at Emory, Hofstra and Cardozo Law Schools. He is a past President of the New York University School of Law Alumni Association (2003 & 2004). For more than 32 years he has been a member of the Board of Directors and pro bono counsel of WHY Hunger, a not-for-profit founded by the late performer Harry Chapin to deal with issues of hunger, poverty and social justice. He as also is a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Landmark on Main Street, a not-for-profit theater in Port Washington, NY. Mr. Kurland has also served as a a member of the board of directors of the New Jersey Institute For Social Justice. Mr. Kurland serves as a mediator in the N.Y. Supreme Court and as an arbitrator for FINRA, and has previously served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, as well as for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and New York State Courts. He has served as chair of the Committee on Recruitment of Lawyers of the New York City Bar Association.
