Matthew is a former assistant to former first lady of Egypt, Jehan Sadat: Matthew, interned at the University of Maryland, Centre for International Development and Conflict Management (CIDCM) where he was the assistant to Jehan Sadat, a fellow at the center and former first lady of Egypt. Matthew was evacuated from Beijing two weeks after the Tiananmen Square Crackdown in June 1989: Matthew studied Chinese language at the Beijing Foreign languages Teachers College in Beijing during the spring of 1989 and witnessed firsthand the rise of protests which ended in bloodshed on June 4, 1989. Matthew was evacuated from China a couple of weeks later.
