DescriptionAndras Acebo is a partner at DeCotiis. He has experience counseling and representing governmental entities, educational institutions and public school districts, and closely-held corporations. His practice focuses primarily on the areas of employment and labor, education law, and government/public entity law. He has counseled and represented both public entities and private business in state and federal court actions, administrative hearings, and arbitration and mediation proceedings. Mr. Acebo is also regularly retained by governmental entities to conduct independent special investigations into alleged public official and employee misconduct and adverse employment actions. Mr. Acebo completed his undergraduate study at Brown University, where he was a senior editor of the Brown Journal of World Affairs and a volunteer at the Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service. He then attended and graduated from Rutgers University School of Law. While in law school, he served as president of the Rutgers Association of Latin-American Law Students, vice president of communication of the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Law Student Division, and managing symposium editor of the Rutgers Race and the Law Review. Mr. Acebo also served as a constitutional law research assistant and a pro bono mediator with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Mr. Acebo has been recognized as a Rising Star in the area of Labor and Employment by New Jersey Super Lawyers, and continues to hold leadership roles within local and national bar associations. Notably, he currently serves as a Deputy Regional President of the Hispanic National Bar Association and Chair of Special Committee on Cuba. Mr. Acebo has published several articles concerning the cross-section of race, law, politics, and public policy with the Columbia Journal of Race and Law, The Brown University Policy Review, the Seton Hall Legislative Journal, and the Rutgers Race and the Law Review. Prior to entering private practice, he clerked for the Honorable Jonathan N. Harris, J.A.D. (retired) in the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey. Representative Engagements & Representations: Advised and counseled closely-held businesses on non-competition, non-solicitation, and non-disclosure agreements and compliance. Counseled and represented local governmental entities and public school districts with labor mediations, fact-findings, super-conciliations, unfair labor practices, petitions for scope of negotiation determinations, and unit clarifications. Advised and counseled public school districts and county colleges regarding public employment law compliance, including but not limited to disciplinary actions, grievance and arbitration proceedings, and severance negotiations. Conducted internal investigations on behalf of local municipalities in connection with allegations of official misconduct by a public official and workplace harassment. Conducted an internal investigation on behalf of a Fortune Global 500 company in connection with a shareholder demand letter and shareholder derivative suit alleging breach of fiduciary duty association with alleged inadequate reserve calculations, insufficient regulatory audit disclosures, and asymmetric business processes. Advised and counseled an international freight forwarding company regarding concerns arising under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and developed related compliance training and due diligence materials. Prosecution of allegations of misappropriation of trade secrets on behalf of a global fragrance manufacturer and international industrial engine manufacturer. Pro Bono representation of religious group challenging municipal zoning restriction under the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act and validity of a century old deed restriction in connection with the intended construction of a house of worship.
